  • Manufacturer Contec
  • Category: DIO Isolated PCI
  • The CONTEC PIO-32/32B(PCI)V is a PCI bus–compliant isolated digital I/O interface board designed for industrial and laboratory automation systems. It provides 32 optically isolated digital input channels and 32 optically isolated open-collector output channels, each grouped in 16-channel commons. The board supports both internal and external power supply configurations and offers robust noise immunity through opto-coupler isolation.
- Opto-Isolated Digital I/O:
32 opto-coupler isolated input channels (compatible with current sink output) and 32 opto-coupler isolated open-collector output channels (current sink type). Each 16-channel group has a separate common terminal, allowing different external power supplies per group.

- High Noise Immunity:
Complete opto-coupler isolation between the PC bus and I/O interfaces ensures excellent noise performance and electrical isolation (500 Vrms dielectric strength).

- Internal Power Supply for Opto-Couplers:
The board includes an internal 12 V DC, 250 mA isolated power supply for driving the opto-couplers, eliminating the need for an external supply. Jumpers (JP2–JP9) allow selection between internal or external power per 16-channel group.

- Interrupt Functionality:
All 32 input channels can be configured as interrupt request signals. Interrupts can be enabled or disabled per bit, and the triggering edge (rising or falling) can be selected via software.

- Digital Input Filtering:
A software-configurable digital filter prevents false signal recognition due to noise or contact chattering. Filter time constants are adjustable from 0 to 20 (0 disables filtering).

- Output Protection:
Each output circuit includes a Zener diode (RD47FM or equivalent) for surge protection and an overcurrent protection circuit per 8-channel block. Rated output: 35 V DC, 100 mA per channel.

- Software Support:
Includes CONTEC’s API-PAC(W32) driver library for Windows and Linux, with sample programs and diagnostic utilities. LabVIEW integration is supported via DAQfast and VI-DAQ libraries downloadable from CONTEC’s website.

- Compatibility:
Fully compatible with PCI 32-bit, 33 MHz bus (universal key shape). Equivalent in pin assignment to the PIO-32/32B(PCI)H model, with enhanced interrupt and protection features.

4. Functionality

The PIO-32/32B(PCI)V serves as a digital interface between a PC and external devices such as sensors, switches, relays, and actuators. It converts digital input signals into logic-level data readable by the host PC and outputs digital control signals to external loads.

- Input Operation:
Each input channel detects ON/OFF states of external current-driven devices (e.g., switches, transistor outputs). The opto-isolated input circuit ensures electrical separation from the PC system. Inputs accept 12–24 V DC signals and can be filtered digitally to suppress noise.

- Output Operation:
Each output channel drives external loads such as relays, LEDs, or TTL-level inputs. The open-collector configuration allows current sinking up to 100 mA per channel. Outputs are reset to OFF when the PC powers on.

- Interrupt Handling:
The board can generate interrupts on any input channel, triggered by rising or falling edges. Interrupt masks and edge selection are configurable per bit, enabling flexible event-driven control.

- Digital Filtering:
The digital filter checks input stability over a defined sampling period. Only signals stable for the configured duration are recognized, effectively eliminating transient noise.

- Software Integration:
The board is programmable via CONTEC’s API-PAC(W32) library, supporting C/C++, Visual Basic, and other Win32-compatible languages. Linux users can employ the API-DIO(LNX) library with GCC sample code. LabVIEW users can integrate through DAQfast or VI-DAQ libraries.

Typical Applications:
- Industrial automation and process control
- Machine status monitoring and control
- Data acquisition systems
- Laboratory instrumentation
- PLC interfacing and signal conditioning
- Event-driven digital control systems
